Spirometry

Once you diagnose obstructive lung disease on the FEV1/FVC pattern, the FEV1% predicted can be used to assess the severity of obstructive lung disease. The American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) recommends the following severity classification in their 2005 standardization of lung function testing document.

Severity of any spirometric abnormality based on the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), from ATS/ERS

Degree of severity

FEV1% predicted

Mild

>70

Moderate

60 - 69

Moderately severe

50 - 59

Severe

35 - 49

Very severe

<35
